Pirates at Ness Beach

The Year 8 class spent time completing a treasure hunt around the small fishing town of Shaldon and then we took a trip through the tunnel towards Ness Beach. In the tunnel we talked about the pirate activity that would have taken place here in Shaldon and along the coast and went on to thinking about buried treasure in Tortuga! This will lead into pupils making small movies next week on the topic of pirates.

Letterboxing 2

Year 9 put their knowledge of grid references to the test by successfully locating the areas of Dartmoor where they would be spending the day. Working as a team they successfully located several letterboxes and collected a number of stamps to start off the school’s letterbox collection.

Letterboxing

Year 9 students have been given a crash course on letterboxing before putting their new skills to the test. During a short classroom session students used ordinance survey maps and six figure grid references to locate local landmarks.

Six of Paignton’s local landmarks were used in a group exercise where students had to find and photograph the location as quick as possible.

Woodbury Castle

On Tuesday 15th September the Year 8 class spent a day exploring the Iron Age fort.

We spent time seeing how long it would take a potential enemy to scale the castle mud walls with spears in hand. We also discussed what life might have been like 2,500 years ago and also attempted to make cutting blades and spear heads by flint napping.

This was the first of three castle visits exploring how castle fortifications have changed through historical time. We were helped by Tom Cadbury from Exeter Museum who demonstrated the napping techniques and showed the pupils ancient artifacts uncovered at the Woodbury site.
