Subjects - Citizenship

What is Citizenship about?

Citizenship lessons throughout KS3 and KS4 aim to provide pupils with the knowledge and understanding necessary to become informed, responsible and active members of society. Citizenship lessons cover a wide range of topics, including the criminal justice system, political literacy and human rights issues around the world.  However, Citizenship extends beyond the classroom and pupils are encouraged to involve themselves in a range of activities to support their development as active members of the school and local community.

How can parents and carers help?

Parents and carers can support pupils in becoming informed and responsible citizens by encouraging them to take an interest in topical issues through watching the news and reading local and national papers.  Supporting pupils in becoming active within their community would also be hugely beneficial – undertaking voluntary work may be appropriate for older pupils, while younger students could be encouraged to recycle.
